I have had the ARRIS SURFboard SB6183 for about four months now and all was well until last night when I woke up to the smell of what I thought was electrical smoke. Turns out, it was the plastic casing of my cable modem (see picture). This modem has always run hot and has ventilation holes all over the casing to compensate, however whatever strategy ARRIS has employed failed on my unit. The unit was fully ventilated in an air-conditioned room but when I attempted to pick it up it was as hot as a stove. I'm just lucky I was home and there wasn't a fire. A quick scan of the reviews on Amazon has yielded no similar articles however I post this cautionary tale as well as the photo as a warning. You can not trust this unit.
