Watered down professional tool kit that is missing many bike specific tools
For more than 15 years Park Tool has offered a set of tools that they label as their "Professional Tool Kit". (These sets were labeled as PK-66 (for 2015) back to PK-57 (about 2003) and before) Those sets of tools allowed the home user to do the vast majority of repairs including removing headsets, setting nut spanners, adjusting rear derailleur hangers, fixing bottom brackets, etc...... Now, for some odd reason, Park Tool comes along and offers a hybrid tool kit that is missing many of the bike specific professional level tools of the PK-66 (and previous sets) and is significantly watered down with a bunch of general shop tools. My first complaint with this PK-2 tool set is that Park has included a large number of general tools that any home mechanic or garage warrior is likely to already own. This would include the hammer, the pliers, the screw drivers, etc.... All of these tools are fine but the vast majority of home tinkerers already own these items and do not need a Park Tool specific model to replace what they own. You can also purchase pliers, screw driver sets or hammers from Home Depot, Lowes or Amazon for much less (and sometimes receive higher quality items as well). So, roughly $250 of the selling price is going towards tools that any advanced home bike mechanic already has. Secondly, this home mechanic kit is missing many needed tools that anyone cycling in 2017 is likely to need. In my case, most of my riding is done on mountain bikes and therefore I need some tools not included in this set like the BBT-3.3 for the newer BB-30 bottom bracket standards. I would also love to see the WAG-4 in this kit for help with wheel truing and the PP-1.2 for disc brake adjustments. Even putting in the DT-2 would be nice for mountain bikers in case their rotors get bent. In today's world the vast majority of bikes over $400 except for racing road bikes have disk brakes. To leave out this critical need in the PK-2 set is an oversight. This PK-2 kit also lacks the HHP-2 headset press of the Park Tool PK-66 Professional Tool Kit of 2015 and the CRS-1, RT-1, TNS-1 and SG-6. So much for working on headsets or cutting steering columns. Overall, I think this kit is very much watered down and I do not like it as well as the professional kit I purchased from Park back around 1999. (which is why you do not see a verified purchase mark for this specific kit) That kit had much more meat so to speak, like the SR-2.2 professional level sprocket remover, the HHP-2 headset press, the WAG-5 and less fluff, like the needle nose pliers, screw drivers, etc... and was only $429. It also came with a much bigger box where it is easier to fit in the headset press (HHP-2) instead of the smaller toolbox included with this set. Also, the asking price for the PK-2 in today's world seems fairly expensive. You will have to decide what is the best mix of tools for the types of riding you do, but overall I give this specific kit about 2 stars because you can supply your own hammer, pliers, etc.. for much less. Park Tool founded their reputation on bicycle tools not general tools. If someone wants a general tool set for their garage, they go to Stanley, Snap-On or Tekton, not Park Tools. When people spend money to buy a professional level bike tool set, my guess is that they want as many bicycle specific tools in the set as they can get. When $250 to $300 of the asking price is for general tools that anyone can buy for less here at Amazon then it is natural for potential clients to feel cheated. The PK-2 is also missing many crucial tools that any advanced home mechanic would want considering the price. Because of these factors I cannot in good faith recommend the PK-2 set. I highly recommend taking a look at the Professional Tool Kit (PK-66) that was offered by Park Tool for 2015 and can still be purchased here on Amazon as a better alternative. (Even better, search for the PK-65 which is also still offered here at Amazon and has a higher quality chain wear indicator than the PK-66)
