Puts the "Grrrrrr!" in Grinder
I read the negative reviews and should have heeded the warnings...but I ordered one anyway and it arrived today. My fears were heightened when I could see the grinding wheels wobble as I spun them by hand. Before messing with assembling the tool rests, shields, etc. I decided to plug it in and check the vibration. Sigh. Really, really disappointing. The vibration is amazingly obvious. This should be the easiest thing to QC at the factory--all they need to do is plug it in and run it.
I was suspicious of getting an 8-inch grinder for a little more than $100. I only ordered this one because my brother has the same grinder and told me it works fine. He was here when I plugged the grinder in and he couldn't believe how poorly it ran. His tool is older so maybe he bought his when DeWalt still cared about quality. This makes me suspicious of ALL DeWalt tools.
UPDATE: While waiting for UPS to pick up the grinder for return, we spent some time diagnosing the problem(s). The cone washers that hold the wheels are stamped and, as others have noted, they aren't necessarily flat/true. But we also found that the shoulder on the shaft that the inside cone washer seats against had a high spot on it. So even if I replaced or machined the cone washers, the wheel would never run true.
These are simple machines: no gears or complex mechanisms, just a motor with an extended shaft. It's almost harder to make it wrong than to make it right. It's not a "made in China" problem. The Apple computer I'm using to write this review was also made in China and it's a beautifully crafted machine. It's a failure by DeWalt to ensure their products adhere to even modest QA/QC standards.
