Persistent and frequent Wi-Fi disconnect / reconnect cycles
It was a challenge to get this lock connected to wifi during initial setup. August support indicated they are aware of this issue. With 24-48 hours of putting lock in service I began receiving notices through their app for iOS that wifi connection lost. With in several minutes would receive another notification that wifi reconnected. I powered cycled the lock and router. Persisted. Moved lock to door with in 20 feet of router. Persisted. Contacted August tech support being informed they recommend a distance of no more that 10 feet between lock and router or access point. I questioned this but they held fast. I decided not to deal with this anymore as still in Amazon's return window. I hope others find this review beneficial.
Follow-up update: On a whim, since my router supports band steering, I enabled a dedicated 2.4GHz Wi-Fi SSID since I found the following on support.august.com.
"If your router supports band-steering, where the router itself decides whether the lock should connect via the 2.4 or 5GHz network, there may be issues. If possible, turn this feature off for your router and try to connect your lock to Wi-Fi again."
Once I joined my lock to this SSID I tested for 24 hours. Every time I got out of bluetooth range of the lock with my iPhone the August app generated a notification that lock lost wifi connection. With in 5-10 minutes another notification would come through that wifi reconnected.
My guess is August uses bluetooth to improve battery life? That said, it seems their 4th generation lock, app or both does not seamlessly switch between bluetooth and wifi. While this may not be an issue when it comes to locking / unlocking my door it does not provide peace of mind nor indicate reliability in my opinion.
