For your safety, stay away from this device
I was willing to give an unknown company a shot instead of going with Garmin, since the reviews I read of this device were good. However, this was a bad experience for multiple reasons. None of the reviews talk about the problems I had. Pretty much every reason below make this company seem really shady and/or incompetent. And this is a safety device. It *needs* to work. Every time. 1.) There is an activation fee and a 90 cancellation policy. Fine, there's an activation fee. If you don't like the device, or it doesn't work for you, you are out of luck. You'll pay $80 minimum ($20 activation + $20/month x 3 months). Why would this company do that? If they expect you to like the product, they wouldn't have a 90 day cancellation policy. And guess what? I'm not happy. It's not working. 2.) There is no way to tell how many messages were sent via satellite or how many you have remaining in the payment cycle. Zoleo provides no interface on their website, on the smartphone app, or any way to request that info. Since messages can be sent via cellular network or satellite, it's a complete guessing game. They will send you *four* messages in a row when you have hit a certain percentage (I thought there was an emergency at home), but that's both annoying while you are out in the middle of nowhere and it's too little too late. 3.) Zoleo continuously sent me messages and emails stating that my device firmware was out of date, and that it was "critical" that I update my device. It was not out of date. I contacted customer support about it, and they shrugged it off and said I could just ignore it. But how do you know what messages to ignore and what are correct? Well, you simply need to check. Every single time you get one of those messages. Note that I *never* had a firmware update on the device. Not once. You have to wonder, is this thing going to work when there is an actual emergency? These emails and messages continue to this day. 4.) It's impossible to find information on many features. For example, I was doing check-ins with my spouse, but they were being sent to her without GPS coordinates. Why? No idea. Did I need to have the device completely unobstructed to send a proper message? Could it be in my bag? Could I continue moving while the message is being sent? Who knows? It's trial and error. If those GPS coordinates are your last known location after you go missing, they could mean the difference between life and death if they are not included in your check-in. I finally decided I can't trust this device with my life. I recommend you don't trust it either.
