★★☆☆☆
Just too unbelievable and gruesome
I'm actually sorry to write this review, because I loved the first two-thirds of this book. In fact, I couldn't put it down. But in the end, I have to say that I pretty much hated it. It is very well written, although there are a number of mistakes. Typos. Missed words, etc. But that was forgivable. Two-thirds of the way through however, it got unnecessarily gruesome and then became increasingly unbelievable. The killer began to take unrealistic risks for no apparent reason. As the story builds to the climax, the mystery began to unravel for me and became increasingly convoluted and then downright stupid. I actually did a hand plant on my forehead at one point and put the book down because I thought it had become so ridiculous. Also, instead of the protagonist figuring out most of the details at the end, two of the 'evil' characters end up 'telling' us everything we need to know - paragraphs and paragraphs of telling us. Lastly, I was profoundly disappointed in the actual ending. After all of that, the book pretty much just ended. Ms. Deleon is clearly a very good writer. But as a thriller storyteller, I felt she was working way too hard to write a best seller by creating a story that was so deviant, people would eat it up. And perhaps they will. I just thought it was written for maximum shock value and made me think of a Criminal Minds episode on steroids.
