Poor design leads to poor results
I purchased this razor in the hopes that it would be an improvement over the five-blade razors that have become so commonplace over the past few years. I have sensitive skin from time to time and felt like I might benefit from using this razor. Unfortunately I found this to be the worst razor I have ever used -- and I have used every Gillette branded razor they've sold in the U.S. in the past 30 years.
The reason this razor fails is the design. There are so many lubricating strips and plastic guards positioned in front of each blade that it never makes full contact with your face. The idea behind the design is to yield a milder, less aggressive shave than what you might find from a typical Gillette Fusion. In reality the strips and guards actually cause *more* irritation because they increase pulling and tugging of facial hair. If the razor blades can't sit flush against your skin then they can't make a clean cut on the hair. It's kind of like an old wiper blade skipping across the top of the rain on a windshield.
What's truly unfortunate is that Gillette has already invented and sold an excellent two-blade razor for those with sensitive skin: the Gillette Sensor Excel. It features two blades positioned close to each other but still set back in the razor cartridge just enough to prevent them from digging into the skin. I have no idea why they wouldn't just re-release it and market it as a razor for sensitive skin. The Sensor Excel was truly exceptional. The Gillette SkinGuard is not.
