★★☆☆☆
Poorly written and edited
I have over 800 books in my Kindle library, most of them paranormal fantasies. I've never left a poor review for any of them, even if I deleted them, because I didn't want to hurt the author's feelings, but I had to speak up about this series. I hope she reads her reviews and looks at her writing with fresh eyes. I loved the description of these books and bought the whole series right away without reading the sample. I'm seriously into the whole Magical Midlife idea and couldn't wait to dive into this but when I did I was SO disappointed. Why did the protagonist, Fiona, refer to herself sometimes in first person then in third? Then the action jumped so that it was hard to figure out what was going on from one minute to the next. For example, at the end of Chapter 5, Sebastian walked out on Fiona and her friend Violet, leaving them injured after a fight with goblins and red-eyed hounds. A page into Chapter 6, Fiona mentioned that Sebastian had cleaned her and Violet's wounds then left Violet on the floor and her in a chair. When did he come back to do that? Why didn't she tell us? That kind of thing happens a lot. Also, Fiona goes back and forth between talking and acting like a kick-ass woman and then a weakling and I got really sick of her whining about her knees and aches and pains. For goodness sake, she's only in her 40's. I'm in my 70's and I don't hurt that much! Anyway, I usually refuse to abandon a book or a series no matter how bad it is but I got to the beginning of Chapter 9 when Mae walks in and Fiona says, "I didn't know the older siren all that well..." I remember thinking, Who's Mae and when did you meet her? There was no mention of her before that. I made it a few more pages and couldn't go any farther. I deleted all three books. I've seen the progression of terrible editing over the past fifteen years or so and can only speculate that good, well-educated editors are in short supply. Trim's book often had interesting characters and plot points, and decent dialogue and descriptions. It could have been salvaged by a good editor. I can only imagine the publisher was so desperate for new material they let serious flaws slide. If you want to read something at the top of this game, read K.F. Breene's Leveling Up, 5-book series that begins with Magical Midlife Madness. I plan to read that series more than once.
