Schlege DOES NOT HONOR its warranty if it ispurchased at Amazon.com
I purchased this lock several years ago and installed and programmed it without any issues or problems. The lock failed and Schlage immediately replaced the lock and did not want the old lock back so I put it in a box and forgot about it. I ordered a new lock FROM AMAZON and immediately started having problems. 1. SCHLAGE WILL NOT HONOR ANY OF THEIR PRODUCTS WARRANTY IF IT IS PURCHASED FROM AMAZON! This is according to their phone-in Customer Service Representatives. 2. The new lock had a revised design which will not allow the changing of the key without removing four screws which will void their warranty. 3.The only way to rekey the lock is to take it to a locksmith. My lock did not work with the key in the locked or unlocked position which was not the case with my first lock. This did not concern me since it was very apparent that the design had been changed. I took the lock to a big box store to rekey the lock. We disassembled the lock to get access to the key locking mechanism. The key was changed and the lock was assembled. I installed the lock, plugged in the battery, but the lock would not work. At this time I called Schlage Customer service. I explained that we had disassembled the lock to change the key and then promptly told me the warranty was void. I tried to tell them something was missing from the new lock but they refused to listen. I asked to talk with a supervisor and they said one was not available. I went to Lowe's and purchased another lock with the earlier removable key lock design. I had them rekey the lock and installed it. THIS DESIGN WITH A DOOR TO REMOVE THE KEY LOCK MECHANISM IS A 5 STAR. THE DESIGN WITHOUT TWO BLACK PLASTIC REMOVABLE DOORS IS TO BE AVOIDED. I WOULD GIVE IT 0 STARS IF POSSIBLE. THIS IS A GIANT STEP FROM A VERY GOOD LOCK TO A PIECE OF GARBAGE JUST IN ORDER TO SAVE A FEW PENNIES IN MANUFACTURING. At this time, my curiosity as an Professional Degreed Engineer got the best of me. I retrieved the old lock that had quit working and took it apart. The reason for the failure of the new lock was the absence of small plastic "rivet" and a spring. It must not have been installed at the the factory. I removed the spring from a ball point spring and cut off about 3-4 coils. I placed the spring on the "rivet" and assembled the lock that had been replaced on warranty. The lock worked like new. The spring must have failed and fallen out of the lock. The spring and "rivet" must have cost at least a nickel. Schlege chose to replace a $100 lock instead of supplying me with a small spring which was replaced with 1/10 of a ball point pen spring. Good economic sense! I believe this is a case of an engineer who has never installed a lock and a bean counter who saw how to save a few cents on a $100 lock. For the sake of a small plastic rivet and spring that Schlage would not supply, I have given this review the one star. Again, If the FE595 lock has two black plastic doors, the lock is 5 stars. If it only has one door at one end, avoid it at all costs.
