liked it right up until I had to replace the string. addendum
I would have given this a 4 right up until I had to replace the string. Positive: the battery life was at least half an hour of steady trimming. It is light but a little short. It has a mechanical feed not on demand like every other string trimmer I have owned. The cutting diameter is listed as 10 in. I never saw the string longer than 2 inches which gives about a 6 in dia. Such a short diameter made the edger wheels useless, but I am willing to live with that. The final straw came when I used up the preloaded string and had to replace it with the extra string supplied with the trimmer. No matter how carefully and tightly I wound the string onto the spool it would recoil when I loaded it back into the trimmer. This caused the string to cross itself on the spool and break when It played out to that point. Also, the recoil would suck the end of the string back inside the spool housing and I had to take it all apart and start over. An hour of winding and rewinding the string resulted in about 20 feet of edging before the 10-15 feet of replacement string was gone. I was willing to let the 800 assistance number tell me what I was doing wrong but I got a recording that the line was not in operation at this time and their hours are M-F 9-5 EST. I called at 2:30. When I requested a return Amazon said they would submit the request to the seller and the seller will have to approve the return. I am waiting. UPDATE After talking to 2 different service reps I still have no idea how to wind on new string. The company is sending me another pre-wound spool and one rep suggests that perhaps looking at that may help. When I went to the amerisuninc (powersmart) website to see how much pre-wound spools cost I do not see any trimmers in their product line. Update to update The pre-wound spool arrived today (after their business hours) and it is the wrong one and looking at IT is no help. 6/20/20 FINAL WORD ON THE SUBJECT I have not used this trimmer as much as I would have liked because of the line feed problems. I bought it because it was listed as a trimmer and edger. It never worked as an edger because the line never got more than 2 or 3 inches long. Today when I tried to use it the handle shaft partially detached from the head. The shaft is attached to the head by 2 screws that pass through the bottom of the bracket on the trimmer head, through the shaft and into a piece on the head. That screw stripped out of the 'nut' built into the head and there is no way to use a longer or bigger screw to reattach it. I will use a hose clamp as a temporary fix until I can buy another trimmer. I will chalk this purchase up as a learning experience. Lesson learned look at all of the reviews and make sure refills for the line can be rewound and/or available locally. I have a friend who will take anything. I will pass it on to them with the above notes.
