Very disappointing
I followed the directions that came with culture precisely and the end result was nothing but wet flour. My undergraduate degree was in microbiology... I know how to grow a little yeast and bacteria. I can only assume the culture was dead on arrival.
A 4oz jar of bread yeast at your local grocery will cost you about $5. A teaspoon (approx 0.1oz) of this stuff is over $11. .. or over 80 times as much. Still, all in all, worth the expense if the product got you authentic San Francisco yeast and some Lactobacillus. A plane ticket to California to pick up a viable culture on your own would have been waaaaaaay more. ;)
VERY disappointing.
My next online stop is their customer service. I'll be back to update this post with their response when/if I get one.
ADDENDUM: Amazon promptly issued a refund and the manufacturer was very quick to post reply here. Transportation and storage of live cultures can be tricky and is likely what caused this problem. I may try it again at a later date... maybe with same manufacturer... maybe not. May attempt to culture local wild strains of yeast.
