A story about how a bad customer service experience led me to much better products! :-)
Okay, first off, full disclosure. In the past I was a huge fan and supporter of Green Magma. In fact, I used to buy this product in bulk (i.e. 5-6 month supply). I used it faithfully for years and recommended it to others. But no more. The customer service department completely soured me on this company. As a result, I stopped using Green Magma, decided to try other products, and found MUCH, MUCH better alternatives. So in a way, maybe I should be glad for my terrible customer service experience. Because it led me to try much better products! :-)
This review may be a bit long because I'm going to try and give you what I've learned about the alternatives to Green Magma.
Let's see, I'll try not bore you with all the details of my bad customer service experience. So essentially I called up the customer service hotline with a small problem/complaint and asked for help. They completely refused to help. Even when I pointed out that I've been a faithful customer for years and the solution was rather simple. The rep just blew me off. The bottom line of the conversation seemed to be, "Look, we only care about selling our product and making money. Whatever happens after that, you're on your own." That was incredibly frustrating. It also made me feel like a fool for trusting this company for so long.
Anyway, as a result of that call I decided I could no longer support this company in good conscience. And I especially couldn't recommend their products to other people like I had in the past. So I decided to try other products. And boy, am I glad I did. Turns out there are many great options out there now and I've found many green juice powders that are far superior to Green Magma. Here's a list of other products I would recommend:
Amazing Grass - I like the range of offerings this company has. The taste is probably the best of any of the different brands I've tried. They also seem to dissolve well in liquid. Overall, the price seems fairly reasonable too. The one's I've tried and liked are:
- Green Superfood - Nice Mix of different ingredients. I liked their Berry Flavored version. My wife likes the Chocolate flavored version, but personally I didn't care for it as much as the Berry. Mostly though, I stick with the Original formula which is unflavored.
- Raw Reserve - Granted this one is a bit more expensive than the regular version, but to me it felt like I got extra energy during the day using it. Maybe that's all psychological I don't know. But I bought a jar and use a bit of this every day along with a larger dose of the Green Superfood so I'm kind of hedging my bets.
- Amazing Trio Powder - This one has Barley Grass, Wheat Grass, and Alfalfa. Good combo. Yes, it probably tastes more like "mowed grass" than the other versions, but it's still better than Green Magma (see below).
- Kids Version - They make two flavors for kids that are pretty good. One is Berry and one is Chocolate flavor. My kids like both, but the Berry flavor a bit more.
Green Vibrance - The taste is more mild than many other brands and I like the fact that they include probiotics in their mix. Also, if you buy the larger tubs it's more economical.
Barley Max / Barley Green - The other two brands that I tried and liked were Barley Max and Barley Green. But the problem with those is that they both seem to be produced and sold only by Multilevel Marketing (MLM) firms which really inflates their price. Maybe that's not a problem if you belong to one of those MLM's and can buy it cheaper than the list price, but since I don't belong to either of them the price just seems too high when other options are available.
Now that I've tried other brands, here's what I've found that I DON'T like about Green Magma...
1. Green Magma is quite possibly the worst tasting Barley Grass / Green Juice Powder on the market. Or at least, it's now officially the worst I've ever tried. Even from the first time I started using this years ago I thought it tasted terrible. But I had heard from many people that ALL green juice powders taste terrible and you just have to get used to it. So, that's what I did. But now that I've tried other brands I can tell you that every single one I tried tastes better than Green Magma. Seriously, don't try to choke this stuff down and just "learn to like it" like I did when there are better options out there. Yes, it's true that green juice powders in general don't taste wonderful, but now that I've tried many other brands I can tell you that this one takes the cake for worst taste. Especially avoid this product if you have kids and you want them drink it. In my experience, Green Magma will spoil them on healthy green drinks in general. And if you put this in smoothies (which I've done for a long time), it really makes the smoothie taste "acidy" and your kids won't want to drink it. At least, mine sure didn't. But once I switched to other brands (especially Amazing Grass), the kids would start drinking it.
2. Green Magma clumps up like crazy. Again, I used to think this was normal. And to some extent it is. But in my experience, Green Magma clumps far worse than any other brand I've tried. Why is this a big deal? Well, because when you try to dissolve this in water or some other liquid you end up with big chunks of powder that don't dissolve properly and then get "stuck" in your throat when trying to drink it, which tastes awful (and for some reason sends a shiver up my spine--and not in a good way). Or these clumps end up sitting on the bottom of your glass which causes you to have to either put in more water to wash it down or to throw it out. But seriously, after living with this problem for years, I can say, why even mess with that when there are other good brands that don't have nearly the problems that this one does.
3. The third reason is diminishing results. When I first started using Green Magma I noticed that it did two things for me. First, it seemed to help curb sugar cravings. Second, it seemed to give me more energy. However, after using it for years I can say that those initial benefits seemed to go away over time -- especially in the last 6 months of use. Now I've read some other reviewers who claim that the company has recently changed their formula or their production process or something. I have no idea if this is true or not, but I can tell you that in my experience the product sure seems to have gone downhill. Or maybe a better way to put it is this...once I switched to other products (specifically Amazing Grass and Green Vibrance) I have had MUCH better results with lowering sugar cravings and higher energy levels. I've also experienced some weight loss and better mental clarity after moving AWAY from Green Magma and switching to other products.
4. My fourth and final reason I now no longer recommend Green Magma is that it is expensive. Compared to other brands (except for the MLM ones), this one is almost always higher priced. Now if it delivered superior results, maybe that higher price could be justified. But as I pointed out previously, the results I've experienced are actually worse than with other brands. So why pay more for a product that gives below average results?
So why, you may be asking, did I stick with Green Magma so long if I had all these complaints about it? Well, two reasons, I guess. First, I suppose I'm kind of a creature of habit in that I tend to try something and if it works reasonably well, I tend to stick it. Second, because Green Magma was really the only green juice powder I had tried before I just didn't know any better. But now I do. So I wanted to pass this information along to you in case you'd find it helpful.
This is the first 1-star review I've ever written. And though I felt like I needed to do it, I'll be honest, in some ways this review has been hard for me to write. First, because in general I consider myself a pretty positive person and don't like giving a negative report unless I feel it's truly deserved. Second, I feel kind of silly now having used this product all those years without knowing there are much better products out there. And finally, I feel bad that I've supported this company for so long and recommended them to friends when they don't seem to care about their customers at all (unless it's for the initial sale).
But, as I said previously, perhaps I should thank this company for having a terrible customer service department, because in the end they did me a favor. By pushing me away they forced me to try other products which I now like much better and introduced me to other companies which I would much rather support as a consumer.
Thanks for reading this long review. Hope it helps you in some way!! :-)
