Overpriced Gimmick / Toy
The Bello Belly Fat Scanner along with the downloadable app pair to "measure" your belly fat through two separate readings (1" above and below your belly button). From this, the app shows your belly fat "rating" on two different scales both reading from 0-10. The readings each took about 5 seconds about it took about 10 seconds for the app to show my data. The app was quick to download and the reader paired with my iPad extremely quickly. Out of the box, you get the scanner, a 3-page directions booklet (which essentially tells you to download the app), and a USB charging cord (no electrical plug). The box is VERY sturdy and the scanner comes on after pushing the button on top for about 2 seconds. The display then says "Hi". The display only shows two readings that I saw and only changes when scanning. That being said, I just about swallowed my gum when I saw that this thing was retailing for $300. In my opinion, it is essentially a gimmick or toy that shows a body fat "number" based upon imprecise readings. I'm not sure what the number is made up of and the app shows no information backing up the readings or showing any scientific background that the readings actually mean anything. On top of that, the readings vary WILDLY based on where you place the scanner, how firmly press it into your skin, and how closely you adhere to the "1 Inch From Belly Button" reading. I got a score of 5.0 and 5.89 on the two scales (both slightly above "average". On a second reading, I was able to change my score by 0.76 (7.6%) simply by moving the scanner slightly closer to my navel (still within the "eyeball error" of 1") as I did not get out a measuring tape and mark 1" above and below - I simply eyeballed it. I was able to vary the score even more by moving it off the centerline of my body or by pressing it more firmly or lightly on my skin. So unless you scan exactly 1" above and below your navel on the the exact same place on your body with the exact same firmness to your skin EVERY SINGLE TIME, the readings will vary by 5-20% between readings. So your measurements could vary from day to day not through exercise, but just due to random chance. This is not accurate data. If I'm really getting an accurate and meaningful measurement of my stomach fat - which I'm not convinced of. Finally, the app, although attractive, is essentially a one-trick pony as it only shows your belly fat "measurements" over the course of days. It doesn't do anything else other than suggest a broad range of exercises - which Google does for free. The app does link with Apple Health on your device, but so what? I don't need most likely meaningless numbers clouding my overall health regime. Over all I'm not sure what all these 3-4-5* reviews are crowing about as I am super unimpressed by the Bello Belly Fat Scanner - especially at $300. Although a nice rechargeable, hand-held unit in a not-cheap box, in my opinion, this should be a $50 (at most) novelty item with caveats all over the product documentation that it is not a scientific instrument and it is not meant to diagnose or measure anything accurately.
