NOT ideal pen needles if you are a care giver...risk of repuncture!
I used these pen needles with my son's Novolog Echo pen. I went through the 3 boxes I purchased BEFORE writing this review to give them as fair a review as possible, So. I won't buy this brand again. My son is 3 and has Type 1. Stressful enough. So when you add sub par products into the mix, it's not a great situation. We all know how expensive all of the name brand diabetic supply products (that the pen manufacturers recommend you to use) are. Diabetics and caregivers like me are constantly trying to find generic equivalents that are good quality. These are just 'so so' in regards to the actual injection part ( my son always winced after injection with these, and NEVER with the more expensive brands like BD. And I'm gentle. Trust me. I'm gentle. He's three. And I'm very careful about making shots as easy for him as possible. Hey, I'm a mom.) But what really sticks in my craw with these needles is how inefficient they are when trying to remove the needle from the Echo pen after injections. Here's what I'm talking about...After using this needle to inject, ( as with all pen needles) you are supposed to be able to replace the outer pen cap onto the needle, then twist off...when you do that, the inner needle is supposed to reattach itself to the outer pen cap and remove easily WITH it for disposal. That way, you aren't forced to unscrew the needle part itself off with the needle itself showing and exposed ( with the risk of accidentally puncturing yourself.) Well, after injection, after reapplying the outer pen cap and carefully trying to unscrew both parts off, more othen than not, the outer cap and inner needle NEVER SEEM to reattach into one piece again and unscrew off easily. Seriously. It happens more than 80% of the time. And TRUST ME. IVE PRACTICED trying to get the darn outer needle to reattach itself properly and have both parts come off in one easy swoop. Like I said, it doesn't work and you are forced to take off the needle itself by twisting it off WITHOUT the protection of the outer cap. (I guess you could try to reattach the INNER cap, but therein is also a risk for repuncture which is why Pen manufacturers tell you to throw away the inner cap immediately before injection. That outer cap, when reattached, is SUPPOSED to give you that protection during disposal, not the inner cap.) For some people who are handling all their own care, they may not care about this risk of repuncture all that much. I don't in the sense that I'm taking care of my 3 year old son, and if I accidentally prick myself with his used needle, for me that's not a huge deal, but it's still not recommended. When he starts school, I don't want to hand the school nurse a bag of supplies for him/her to use in his diabetic care and include these terrible pen needles that put her/him at risk for puncture after injection. Like I said, if you are administering all your own care and don't care about the risk of repuncture then fine, but if you do, or of you are a caregiver, you may want to look elsewhere for a quality pen needle. I hope this review can help someone else who,has struggled with pen needles like these. Sometimes you do get what you pay for.
