Virtuous English progressive goes back in time machine to 18th and 19th century India
In the true spirit of revisionist history, there the handsome and politically correct hero finds himself ahead of the times, virtue signaling his distaste for the predatory East India Company by setting up the equivalent of Ten Thousand Villages based on fair trade. He also nobly ignores the caste system and his colleagues' British colonialist prejudices by marrying an Indian woman and single handedly raising his son. His mother, a combination of Mrs. Bennett and Lady Catherine De Bourg, handily acts as a vehicle for expressing every horrible prejudice attributed to the British people then and now, particularly Christians who talk about Jesus but of course act horribly toward all people of color and who did nothing to mitigate the horrors of suttee, shrine prostitution, child marriage and so forth. Lavish sets and costumes do not help this tedious and preachy melodrama, nor does the acting do justice to the terrible script. The one positive is that the male leads wear great rock star costumes.
