This is not book
This is the first installment in a serial, not a self contained book with a narrative arc. It's just a beginning, and not a particularly well fleshed out beginning. And sadly, because the author chose to write this story in this fashion, there was a lot of back and forth between the H and the h that was pretty slow and boring without a whole lot of plot progression so this story can milk the reader out of $14 by the time you have a complete read.
The premise so far is a bad guy takes an unsuspecting girl out of her life and inserts her into to his (you're mine!) against her will. We don't know why yet. She appears to be the target of someone else as well, but, we don't know who this other protagonist is or what his motivations are - not that we know that about Sterling yet, either. His character has some meat on it - but he's schizo so far - wanting to protect from everyone else, but physically hurting her himself, and not in a "sexy" way.
Kennedy/Spider Name heroine (who conveniently leads a company based on silk - spiders don't weave silk, worms do) is a pretty much a cardboard cut out that we know little about. She is adopted, her adoptive father dies and her adoptive mother sends her away never to be seen again, with a dire warning about Chicago and Sterling. Then we meet up with her again when she is 26 as a successful business woman. How did she get to that place with her traumatic background -who knows? The reader doesn't because her background wasn't filled in. Why is she attracted to Sterling (she senses he is dominant and she might like that, but really, she confuses douche with dom for the most part). Her lust/hate back and forth was hard to understand given how thinly her character was drawn.
Net, this is an uneven, unsatisfying slow moving set up for the next book, and should have either been a KU read with an upfront warning, or sold for $.99 because quite frankly, this tale has been done by others in one book for $2.99 as a satisfying read. It's a shame, because this author has written series before (not a serial, like this) that were excellent.
