Baffling void
I was looking forward to reading this romance drama after all the high reviews I saw here and all the recommendations, and I'm astounded. This book was narrated by the whiny and childish heroine in a dull and tedious way from the very beginning up until the very end. Predictable and melodramatic plot, the story was inexplicably "emotional" where there was no real emotion to be had. The whole subplot about the heroine's daddy wound and all her insecurities might have been interesting, but ended up only being a big wash of treacly nothing bordering on the ridiculous after all the buildup. The dashing hero uttered the usual phrases of "you are mine, only mine" etc, etc, etc. The hero Jackson, has some post-war issues that are kept mysterious and a past love wound mystery too, (Cliffy! Buy the next book!) and suddenly and abruptly he's the one pushing away from the heroine "for her own good." Numerous immature misunderstandings and hurt feelings abound here, while cute/cozy, flirty/steamy times round out the menu. The characters are one dimensional at best. One minute Catherine is telling us how professional she always is and how she "exudes power" in the office, and the next she is using the F word in a business argument in the office, albeit with her ex's mistress, but come on. Fantastic interior reflection on Catherine's part such as: "It baffles me how I could have turned this man away." Yes, this whole enterprise baffles me to no end. Ugh.
