★★☆☆☆
<insert negative comment> i'm too infuriated to be catchy right now
you know what, i like this author. i love her Wicked Lovers series and honestly she was the catalyst that helped me understand that my craving for more spice in life was really BDSM, like i wish i could thank her personally for that. In all the years that I've been reading her books, and re reading them, even if i didn't like the stories, i still remained a loyal reader, i NEVER once saw her write about a black woman or a black man. it was annoying when she's written about so many characters with different backgrounds, but none of them were black and here this book comes. i was excited... until i realized that she made Nia biracial... ok, close enough, keep reading. Then i realized that she essentially couldn't get enough of making Nia out to be some overtly sexualized slut and Evan this paragon of a person who lacks sexual experience. every other page was pretty much a complaint of how sexual Nia was and how Evan had no experience, it was evan CONSTANTLY complaining about her past experiences as if she's not a young, successful, beautiful woman who enjoys life while he put his on hold for his dead wife that he didn't even love. Hell he didn't even notice Nia until he saw her strip in a Burlesque show (which by the way, another strike against this author for further solidifying her point in making nia look as much like a whore as possible). Then there was this random line in the book where Shayla decides to describe a redheaded man as just a ginger "When I knowck twice on the glass, a ginger with a bushy beard..." SERIOUSLY!?!?! is that the only way you could describe him??? as just a ginger? the only reason i gave this 2 stars is because in spite of the author's attempt to make this woman be a whore compared to her "perfect" white female heroines, Nia holds her own and is unapologetic about who she is and her experience. but Screw evan and his narrow mind and his attempts to be a slut shaming @ss! horridly, ironically enough this author has one other book with a black female lead... it's one of the crappy menage books where she has 3 lovers. So that lets me know that Shayla only things of black females as EXTREMELY sexual creatures (such as when we were called jezebels and hottentots back in the day), this would be ok if her white female characters were given the same treatment as opposed to them being these prudish, innocent creatures with sexual men. it's even more aggravating because when i had interactions with Shayla on facebook, she got defensive to my questions and after she was called out a few times on her lack of diverse characters that don't fall into harmful stereotypical tropes.
