A Space Battle Probably Better Missed
This is a very simple grid defense game. You pick the race you want to be from 3 choices: human, cylonish, and I'm not even sure what the 3rd race was because you have to pick it from 3 little icons. You can pick from 3 different ships that have different power, shield and hull defense stats but what you pick doesn't really matter as it is constantly upgraded during gameplay. You receiving incoming messages, you answer the hail and find out that there is a ship in distress somewhere. The game then asks if you want to go there or stay where you are. Of course you want to go there! The friendly ships are marked with a green dot. The enemy ships are marked with a red dot. You have two weapons buttons: Torpedo(bottom right) and Phasers(bottom left) that you use to attack with. You can move all around the grid to avoid torpedoes and phasers. Unfortunately, the enemies appear to have lost all thruster power and are as stationary as bricks. What's the fun in that. However, as you play on higher difficulties there are more enemy ships so evasive maneuvers(moving your ship out of the line of fire) becomes more challenging, but sadly that really doesn't make the game any more interesting. Once you destroy a ship or when you pass an asteroid field or planet you can attempt to loot it and gain phaser, shield, torpedoes or other power ups. If you need repairs you can go to the nearest space station. The graphics are nice, color scheme is good and the human voice hails are clear but sometimes there is voice overlap in the messages. On the top left side of the screen there are four menu buttons: Galaxy(a way to find more enemies via grid sectors), Shields(a way to divert power and boost your shields), Hail(a way to communicate with space stations), and Missions(which tells you where your ship is needed next to defend friendlies). There is so much empty space on my Fire HD 8.9 and yet these buttons are crowded so so close together that it's hard to touch the one you want when you want at times. Even with the tutorial option turned off the constant message blurbs on the screen interfered with any enjoyment I might have gotten from the game. Moving your ship around the grid was very fluid. You just touch the sector you want to move it to and it jumps there. Torpedo sound effects were ok, not very loud but there were no sound effects at all when I just used phasers. If I'm going to play a shoot 'em up game I want some big noise. That was no where to be found in this game. I'm a big Star Trek fan and while in theory this game sounds quite compelling it just doesn't reach it's potential. Basically you are just repeating the same series of steps over and over: get mission-->go to assist ship-->fight ship(s)-->loot-->go for repairs if needed-->get next mission. If you get bored you can alway click on "Galaxy" and explore grids where enemies are present, but it's still basically the same cycle of events. With no scoreboard or achievements there is no feeling of doing well or being rewarded for increased skill or superior efforts. There are definitely some positive things about the game and perhaps I could have found more except that my Fire screen auto timed out every 5 minutes causing the screen to black out and stop the game. I started getting frustrated at that point. This game needs a permission here for that issue. Overall I say try it, you might like it more than I did. It's not a bad game, but honestly I just didn't find the battles very exciting and nothing really stands out about this highly repetitive game. The concept is good and there is potential here but to run seamlessly it needs more work. To be fun this game needs more weapons, more noise. more variety, a storyline and those enemy ships must at least move a little for the sake of a tiny bit of a challenge.
