Shadow cast over 40-50% of your view. Refractory mirror out of wack.
NOT a fan. Maybe I got a bad one and if so I hope Dr. Mom Otoscopes will rectify the situation. Brand new about a month ago and just got around to using it on my daughter to do diagnose otitis media. Here's the problems:
HUGE complaint that inhibits its usefulness is the refractory lens or projection portion of the light casts a shadow over 40-50% of your view. That percentage leaves you blind to that section unless to rotate the otoscope at least 100 degrees to illuminate the portion that was originally dark. Frustrating to spend more time in the ear and uncomfortable and unnecessary. Next you have to get right up on the tympanic membrane to see it clearly and by that time your causing pain (I tested on just some micro text to see how close I had to get and it 1-2mm distance if that and I have 20/15 vision...not going to do that to my daughter or a patient). I'm not a newbie as I'm ER/Trauma and in NP school so I'm use to looking in ears with a Welch Allen in many many ears. I hate to write a really negative review but it's not good. Again, if I got a lemon I hope the company with send one with the view I need/expect and I will update with hopefully the problem solved. Attached are pictures of the views I'm talking about. The 1st person views have a speculum on. Several are taken with the otoscope held perpendicular to a desk with/without speculum and you can see the irregular light pattern. Should be a perfect circle.
