I'm hard to please. Science fiction readers are generally picky. Specifics: 1) space ships do not "slow down" when their means of propulsion stops. The author made this mistake twice. Trivial? What it demonstrates is that the author is fundamentally ignorant of basic physics. It is called Science fiction. 2) High technology societies require distributed political power structures. Human history is full of examples of failed civilizations that tried to concentrate and failed because of the attempt. Lords and serfs? Ridiculous! 3) I would really appreciate the industry instituting a rating mechanism that would inform the perspective reader that the author has written the book in the "preteen" universe. That's the alternate dimension where an unattached heterosexual couple attracted to each other, aware of the existence of contraceptives, over the age of thirty, with IQs above 100, behave as if they are both slightly backward adolescents born into the "leave it to Beaver" family unit. 5) My definition of a story: It has a beginning, a middle and an ending. Even if you a planning a series! I really get disgruntled when an author stops a mediocre attempt to write a "story" in the "middle" so they can lure me into buying the next "middle" of the same "story". (I will not be wasting my gold on Mr. field's forthcoming sequel.) If you would like to see how this is done well, try the Dorsai books by Dickson. Finally my credentials. BSEE, BSNE, MSME, MSSE, Submarines, Surface Warefare, Rocket Scientist, Fire Control System design, Contributor to three romance novels (interesting story), avid shooter and beta reader.
