while trying to shred two simple paper checks, the unit kept jamming, i kept trying to reverse it then start it over....after several attempts the unit shockingly had a small explosion and caught fire, not just a small fire, but rather large one. i immediately unplugged it and had to take the top part off to prevent already shredded paper in the bottom part from causing a major fire. this was shocking, caused burns to my arm and could have been a major catastrophe. i have not heard from amazon yet about returning this item, which i definitely think they would want to see........... There is a "risk of fire label " on the top of the unit, however no sort of lubricant of any kind was ever used on it. i had previously shredded one credit card, which i noticed still had pieces of plastic in the shredders, so perhaps this had something to do with it......but that would not make sense since it should easily be able to shred a credit card. i would never recommend this problem under any circumstances. Amazon should be making more of an effort to get this unit back to thoroughly inspect it for any possible defects, but i have yet to hear from them at all!!!!!
