★★☆☆☆
Underwhelming upscaling ability, only works well for 480p
I have a very elaborate hdmi setup for retro consoles, including the RetroUSB AVS, Analogue Super NT and Mega SG, Ultrahdmi modded N64, Gamecube Carby HDMI, Wii U, Pound PS2 HDMI, PS3, PS4 and Switch. Since many of these run through a Monoprice 8x HDMI switch, I figured using this for the HDMI out would get some amazing value by upscaling and applying anti-aliasing to up to 8 consoles to my 4k TV. Long story short, this product is amazing for Gamecube, and nothing else I listed. It makes anything 240p worse (leaves most of the image unchanged, but introduces random artifacts). The impact on anything 1080p is negligible and not worth $100. I tried downscaling to 720p on consoles that allowed it, and 720p+mClassic was not better than 1080p +nothing or 1080p+mclassic. If Gamecube is your favorite system, and you play a lot of different games, this may be worth it to you if you have the Carby or GCHD MK-II. The impact was really drastic, and made the gamecube look like it was natively outputting 1080p. Jagged edges were smoothed out beautifully. I really wish Insurrection Industries could implement whatever this is doing on the Carby itself. The real drawback for me was the N64. I was hoping this would help the notoriously worst system for getting decent video quality on modern televisions, and as amazing as the Ultra HDMI mod is, its still n64, and some games still look like garbage. But I tried several games, and none of them were improved by this device. 2 out of the 5 looked worse. If this was $40-$50, it might be worth it, since you can use it with an HDMI switch or AV receiver and toggle it off when you need to (though I wish it had a remote, the toggle is difficult). But the price point of this is pretty silly. I don't know who else besides gamecube superfans or rich people that this would be worth it to.
