Blizzard swings and misses
Sorry, Blizzard. I will be returning this game- the first time in many moons I have done such a thing. I have plenty of games that I didn't like but still kept. But Diablo III is a game that I cannot play. It has taken 15 gigs on my computer, and has a pretty splash screen with introduction video...Beyond that, problems at battle.net prevent me from logging in. It is a game whose requirements for internet connectivity deliver me zero value in single player games while bringing immense frustration. And even worse, this requirement is hidden from anyone who doesn't read between the lines or check reviews prior to purchase. If you read the reviews, you will see a lot of discussion condemning or defending Blizzard's DRM/Battle.net decisions. I really don't care at this moment. What I care about is the fact that Blizzard sold me a misleading bill of goods that is- frankly- broken right now. 1) There is nothing on the Amazon Product Description explaining that a player must have a persistent internet connection- whether to play with friends on your LAN, or even just to play a single player game. NOTHING. 2) One must go to the reviews to find this important information- which is difficult for someone who pre-ordered very early. It is a horrible failure for Blizzard AND Amazon that this information is not PROMINENTLY displayed on the product page. 3) Even the Diablo game box does not sufficiently explain this requirement. "Internet connection required". This is all that the box says (in tiny print). Blizzard should do the right thing and say, "Continuous Internet Connection required. If Internet connection is interupted, this game will not function." It is explicit, and removes all doubt. 4) As of this evening, when I was told that my pre-order would get me a game to play, I cannot play. Any attempt to connect to battle.net fails. I wish I had researched this game a bit more before ordering, but oh well. The fact is, I live in the country and get rather spotty internet service. I fully understand the need to have a controlled environment for Multiplayer experience. But the decision to require ALL play- even private friend games, LAN games and (worst of all) single player games- to go through Battle.net means that Diablo III will always be an exercise in frustration for me. I know that my unreliable internet connection will not be a factor for many people, but it is a factor for me. And many people are learning on release night just how un-enjoyable it is to have a design based on a Single Point of Failure like Battle.net. Diablo II had options that allowed my wife and I to play via LAN if we didn't have internet connectivity. It had options for playing among trusted friends over the internet when Battle.net was unavailable. This requirement for persistent Internet connectivity does too much to suck the value out of this game. I must deal with lag even when playing a single player game. I am unable to play the game on my laptop when riding in a car, flying in an airplane, or in any other case where I am away from the internet. My wife and I will probably be unable to play together since our internet connection will likely strain to handle two clients' traffic. All for what? Anti-hacking security for multiplayer games I will never use? Some silly Auction House functionality? I'm sorry Blizzard. It just isn't worth it.
