★★☆☆☆
Not for the mature reader, but I bought the whole series.
This is a Fantasy Romance novel, not Romance first, but it's intended for the young female reader who wants some real excitement in her story. Probably many teenage boys will love it too, from the number of positive reviews a lot of others did, but if you are a mature reader, especially if you've read a lot of fantasy, I'd say 2 dollars is 2 much. I'm a voracious reader, I'll read almost anything and, I thought, a best seller for two dollars? Sure, and then when I got to the end it was so exciting that I decided that three more books for six dollars was worth it too. I wish I hadn't. This series uses every standard trick, and the worst bit is that it's times two--a hero and a heroine--each of which is a very simple character with standard (and different) super powers. She is the ultimate magic user he ths super warrior. Then there are the standard plot twists, which I won't go into detail about because I don't want to spoil it for you. But I will say that in the second book he uses the same objectionable plot twist THREE times! I prefer it when that trick is never used, the second use and I'm screaming, the third and... well. And critical actions by the people in the stories are just stupid. I mean really stupid. But that's not the worst bit. In this series using a bow and arrow as a military weapon is a big innovation! There's an entire culture that rides horses into battle and no one else uses horses! It's just sad. Yea, you say, so why did you buy the entire series? Because on the bright side it is fairly well written, good pacing, and the exciting highs are really high. I more or less said "hang the realism, this is good stuff." But then, well, that was the first in the series. Book two is quite a bit worse. So why do I say the author is shooting for the young female audience? Well (though maybe I shouldn't admit it) I have read some of the modern romance fantasies, even finished a few, and basically this has all the hallmarks. Everyone, and I mean everyone, who is a main character is drop dead gorgeous. If you want to know how important someone is just check out how gorgeous they are. There are long chapters spent on loosing virginity, it is frankly lightly pornographic. So, if that's what you want, well there are better books out there. Oh, and finally, this is not a four book series. It's really, from what I can tell, two two book series. Which is not necessarily worse, but you don't need to read books three and four to get a grand completion. Book three really drops into soap opera stuff. So, in the end, if you want to read the first book go ahead. It is only two dollars. But don't say I didn't warn you. (And don't buy the second.)
