When I sit with my daughter and talk about all the things she can accomplish in life, I often consider what she could do with a PhD. Imagine what a wonderful world we could live in if all educational opportunities were available to everyone equally and inspiration to attain our maximum potential did not mean having to work twice as hard to compete with some privileged elite. But alas, I apparently have been going about it all wrong. I have been teaching my youngster the values of hard work and reaching for her highest potential. Instead, I see that if I really want to inspire her toward working toward a great education, I should explain she needs to show a little more leg.
