I should have believed the other reviews
This label maker is a total dud for the occasional user. I had an older Brother Labeler, which performed very nicely for a lot of years. Despite the many negative reviews of this one, I bought it anyway, thinking that Brother would have solved the battery life issue by now. What a surprise I got when during the initial setup, I had no choice but to set the date and time; this generated an AHA! moment! This is the source of the battery life problem, as the machine must maintain this, even when you turn the unit off. Went to Brother Chat, and after a long session determined that there's no way to turn off the date/time, even if you never need it, which I believe a great many users would not. So, for me to print the occasional single label, I have to re-initialize the unit every time I turn the unit on; in addition, since Brother says to not leave batteries in for an extended non-use period, I'd also have to reinsert batteries as well. What a crock! This date/time thing is an example of techies not understanding much of the real world, and putting a "feature" into a device simply because they could. Survey question - How many of you fellow label printer users have ever thought, "Gee, I really need to put the date and time on my labels?" As soon as we get a rain break, I'm taking this dud to Kohl's for return! There's more, but I think you get the point by now - BEWARE this machine.
