Disappointed...
Book editors are such tricksy hobbitses...
They're constantly telling authors to 'hook' the reader in the first fifty words or so. I was seduced into buying this book by reading an excerpt, as the words are so lush and descriptive and set a delicious mood. After that, however, the book is a thudding bore.
It suffers mainly from a lack of characters, which are somewhat central to that wonderful thing called a "plot." The characters were so thinly drawn, made up of only sparse conversations and even sparer descriptions, that I didn't care whether they were killed with a well-aimed dagger. In fact, I wanted to do it myself.
