★☆☆☆☆
history at its worst
There is a book to be written about the way racism has rotted St Louis, but this book is not it. It is so lacking in subtlety, its hatred of almost everyone discussed is so extreme, its overuse (and misuse) of terms like colonialism and imperialism is so tiresome, the more than occasional stupidity of its judgments is so striking that the book is all but unreadable. The first 200+ pages are a total waste; the rest only a relative waste. Broken Heart will convince no one but the already convinced, thus doing a disservice to the cause author Johnson thinks he is serving. There is place in the back of my bookshelves, far from human sight, for this book. If I believed in throwing out books I'd toss this one. I wouldn't give it to charity for fear of inflicting it on some other unsuspecting reader.
