Drive shaft snapped, blade flew off near my head, could have killed me!
I bought this edger last year but have only used it a few times before Winter. Now that Spring is here I got it out of storage and started edging the front sidewalk. After a few minutes the cutting blade suddenly came off and went flying through the air, missing my head by no more than a few inches. It could have killed or blinded me if it had hit me!
My first thought was that the bolt which holds the blade onto the motor drive shaft had come loose and off, thus allowing the blade to come off, but upon examination I saw that the shaft itself had snapped off at the threaded end where the bolt goes on to fasten the blade. Leaving only about two threads around the shaft - not enough to tighten the bolt back onto it. (See picture.) So there is no way to re-attach the blade. The whole motor would have to be replaced.
I don't think I bought an extended warranty so I'll just have to buy another edger. But it won't be another Greenworks!
