★★☆☆☆
A real stinker
Terrible movie. I am not sure why Amazon insists on paying for Tom Clancy rights then deviating so severely it doesnt even resemble Clancy's work. They could have easily changed the title and a few character names and nobody would have even entertained this as anything resembling Tom Clancy. The movie itself suffers from the superhero styling. Completely unbelievable char action and decision making. Disjointed plot that meanders needlessly. I dont care that they made John Clark black. I think MBJ could even be the one to pull it off. I am not familiar with him enough to say for sure but i think he might be suffering from bad writing and directing. Greer being played by a younger woman though is a bit much for me. I will have to read the book again but I think Greer is a lot older. Plus there are no female seals. The action was comical. Borderline superhero abilities. The house break in scene was the only decent action sequence in the entire film. Overall this stinks nearly as bad as the Jack Ryan series on amazon. MBJ is the single thing bumping this up to a 2 star and thats assuming its the crappy writing and directing thats holding him back. edit: Spoilers below After thinking this over for a day I have a bit more to add, I am sorely tempted to move this down to a 1 star. The plot is so bad it should be a crime. It makes no sense at all. So the SecDef is trying to stir up some WWIII action, and hatches this "brilliant" plot. So why try to kill John at his house if he needs to be killed in Russia? Why try to kill him in jail? Why shoot his plan down? Why did the one bade genius guy wire explosives to himself instead of the building? Why didn't John realize it wasnt Russia when he got setup in jail, since Russia wouldn't have that kind of stroke at the BOP? This plot is full of holes. Many, if not half, of the scenes could have been and should have been left out. Some were utterly pointless and some only existed to so MBJ doing something cool. None added any value to the story or characters. Tons of missteps trying to portray military action. Why in hell is a team of seals wondering around the syrian desert with rebreathers on? except to get that cool shot of them popping out of a pool of water in a building. Most if not all the chars were extremely young for their rank. There are no female seals. MBJ randomly shouts nonsense like "evasive maneuvers" to the pilot or "fire in the hole" when shooting his gun. The worst part is that this John char doesn't resemble in the slightest the John from the books. Tom Clancy's John Clark was calm, calculating and very mindful of causing any unneeded damage or harm. This new John Clark is borderline psycho that is purely motivated by rage while gunning down hordes of russian cops. Repeating what I read elsewhere "The big hero scene consisted of a black felon from the US, killing swarms of innocent russian cops who were just showing up to defend their city and its inhabitants" Its bad, just almost as bad as the Jack Ryan series.
