Inflexible. No Web UI. No settings. Vendor lock-in.
I have 4 older ZModo cameras. Based on past good experiences with ZModo, I thought these cameras might be a good value - I was wrong. Here's why: 1. There is no local Web User interface. This breaks a de-facto standard for IP cameras and makes them hard to troubleshoot. 2. It is hard to discover the camera's IP without a Web UI. And the Mac isn't printed on the camera. 3. As of 9/1, there is no support information on the ZModo Web site. You can literally search for the exact model # printed on the camera (ZP-IBI15-W) and there are no results. 4. Would not connect to Blue Iris software. This was a deal-killer for me. (Every other camera I have tried works with this software. Heck, even an old iPhone works as a security camera with this software.) 5. Assuming I didn't want to use 3rd party software, the setup feels like a security risk. The device is on your local network connected to who knows where, but cannot be controlled locally. 6. Assuming I didn't want to use 3rd party software, their software is slow. You have to log in to an Android app or a Web site to view the camera and there is a significant delay before the picture comes up. Had to restart the Android app at least twice (and I am on a nice LG phone less than 2 years old). This delay eliminates certain uses, such as a door camera. Once the picture is up, waving your hand in front of the camera does not appear until a second or two later. 7. Assuming I didn't want to use 3rd party software, their software sucks. My 2-year-old ZModo cameras can be adjusted for lighting, image rotation, and blocking out sections of the image (i.e. trees) that might cause erroneous alerts. There is no way to adjust these settings that I can see, even from the Web site. 8. Since these cameras must be connected "to the cloud" to even work, what happens if your Internet connection goes down? My other cameras will keep working and record to my local PC and DVR. These will not. My system has multiple cameras and I have received over 60,000 YouTube views for my security camera instructional videos and reviews, so I know what I'm talking about. While the hardware might be just fine, the software makes these cameras too good to be true: what could have been a very affordable starting point or building block to a good system is instead just part of a cloud over-dependent crippled and inflexible service. I will be reboxing these cameras, returning them, and going with another brand I'd never heard of that lists Blue Iris capability as a feature. Last ZModo purchase, good riddance and caveat emptor!
