Here we go again....
I made it to chapter 2, October, and pulled out with dread. It’s another Glennon Doyle, Brene Brown, and Elizabeth Gilbert preach. I’m sure it will be another best seller. If you enjoy having the “hero’s journey” taught to yet again in the voice of a professed workaholic, mother, wife, with “Asperger Syndrome” (but diagnosed late), this book is for you. A professor, writer, mom, and wife can be a wonderful story teller. However, as is the case for many self-proclaimed spiritual guides on how to live your life from her experience is a complete misuse of her voice. Yes, she has a story to tell. Yes, she is a lovely writer. And of course, her story matters for her and can absolutely touch others. However, this does not qualify her to lead others and teach how to understand life and navigate it. This old story of “become an expert by being the hero in your own story” is so old and so utterly misunderstood. Admittedly (as stated in my first sentence), I did not finish this book, if she leads the reader into encouraging seeking out a professional for support and guidance, then this would be sage advice. However, given the voice I’ve read thus far, I suspect she offers her book as a guide to anyone that resonates with her story to listen to her life.
