After receiving a long-delayed order, I was looking forward to having nutritional yeast with my chili again. I promptly opened the 1lb bag and shook some onto dinner. Two bites in, I realized I was cracking my teeth on something. Examination of the bag showed numerous dark bits throughout. Currently having too much time on my hands, I sifted the contents of the bag rather than chucking it. That produced about two teaspoons of extremely hard reddish-brown crystals and flakes. While not as hard as pebbles or sand, I think some could probably knock a loose filling out. They look like they could be clumped yeast that got burned or fused in production. Well, hopefully that rather than something random added. For what it's worth if you like flakes, this particular batch of yeast had a very low “flake to dust” ratio, about 1 to 5 by volume. Since this brand seems to be recent and encompasses a wide variety of products, I assume Anthony’s is a middle-man that sources from smaller vendors. Nothing wrong with that, but part of the job is quality control. At the moment that may be difficult, but as far as I'm concerned this bag was essentially inedible as well as dangerous to teeth. The very-hip label says "batch tested"; please consider spending more time on that.
