★☆☆☆☆
Good Idea; Poorly Executed
I think it’s important to talk to children about race, which is why we ordered this book. I thought the first half was good: a discussion about what racism is, and how the color of our skin can offer advantages or be a barrier. Mid-way, the book becomes unhinged, and really delves into absurdity. I think any caucasian child would genuinely feel bad after reading this—or having it read to them: hitting them over the head with the stolen land they’re living on, for example. I understand it’s written for children, but it handles a very complex social issue with zero nuance. I also found the points disconnected. We will continue our search for a book that adequately handles race for children under 10.
