This product was made by the insane. Rather than put two USB-B receptacles in the back for input, they used USB-A. Not only does this mean you can get things backwards, you can't use normal cables. To add insult to injury, the cables they included are a mere 3 feet.
For the curious, this uses an SGM7227 High Speed USB 2.0 DPDT Analog Switch. Switching logic and LED illumination is controlled by a nameless microcontroller, and the USB hub is a FE1.1s USB 2.0 High Speed 4-Port Hub Controller. The hub controller has an input to allow reporting as bus powered or self powered. This input is left floating, but was measured at 4V, so will probably report as self powered. If you don't have an external power adapter attached, this can cause over current situations for upstream ports.
The input USB ports feature diodes on their power rail to prevent back powering the computer, but the supplemental micro usb port doesn't have one, so be aware that this port can get back powered. It looks like there might be a fuse that prevents the 4 ports from drawing too much current, but there is no designation on the part, it could just be a filter.
The PCB appears to be 2-layer construction and it's highly unlikely that the USB pairs meet impedance requirements set by the standard. If you are having problems, the port furthest from the LEDs has the shortest traces.
