★★☆☆☆
Uninspired Writing
I will start with a "positive", as much as one call it that, in that the description of Maddie's ATV accident was compelling and genuinely upsetting. Though the writing in this section is interesting and heartfelt, I feel bad for the child that such a personal experience is being discussed so publicly. The rest of the book is a mess, given Watson's inability to understand that her mother taking her father back over and over, and her doing the same with both him AND her boyfriend (whom she calls "Casper" for some unfathomable reason) are the same thing. There could have been some really profound narrative parallels drawn here, but no such conclusions are ever made. For someone who has claimed in the past not to want to speak on the personal struggles of others, I find it upsetting and hypocritical that Watson devotes a whole chapter to mentioning Britney's 13-year conservatorship, but never goes into detail about how comparable their experiences of feeling trapped, alone, and scared were. Instead Watson continues to further a narrative that publicly paints her sister in an unflattering light–and granted memoirs are known for doing so–while insisting that Britney needs to cease talking publicly herself about the situation. As such, I find myself deeply disappointed with this book. It could have been a keen insight into a family torn asunder by generational trauma and unrelenting fame, but falls almost completely flat instead. *One star added because the writing itself isn't entirely awful. Props to the ghostwriter.
