An interesting project completely ruined by a political agenda
First off, this review is based on the original version of this book. These issues may have been corrected in the revised version, but I would highly doubt it. Loewen's main gripe seems to be that much of history has been whitewashed. He claims that many of our "heroes" had ugly dark sides...and he's right. But, if Loewen's point is that history, as often taught, is nothing more than a series of half-truths, Loewen is equally guilty of the same sin. He clearly approaches history from the left and seeks to negate any positive contributions from the right. In so doing, he would have us accept a different set of half-truths that whitewash ideas that he doesn't agree with. There's nothing wrong with presenting the bad along with the good (and vice versa), but Loewen isn't interested in presenting a factually accurate balanced version of history. He simply wants his ideology to be better represented.
