Wow, so very bad.
I'm a fan of Civil War literature so my lovely wife thoughtfully got this "book" for me for Christmas. It's extraordinarily bad. There are many reviewers who have already written about the historical inaccuracies. For instance, O'Reilly has Andrew Johnson delivering a drunken speech to an embarrassed crowd prior to Lincoln's beautiful second inaugural address. Johnson was drunk and did speak, but to the Senate chamber and not to the crowd outside. I know this because I Googled it. 30 seconds ago. Fantastic scholarship gentlemen. And that's just page one. There are many, many more examples of this kind of thing.
But the writing! Holy smokes! The writing is frighteningly poor. Again, page one, sentence one. "The man with six weeks to live is anxious. He furls his brow,..." Let's stop there, shall we? He furls his brow?! Furls it? Maybe he furrows it, but I doubt that he furls it. A few pages later the authors have Lincoln scarfing his breakfast. Scarfing! Such elegant prose brought a tear to my eye. I plan to read it all, though I know it will be a daunting task, for the simple visceral thrill of consuming something that is so utterly awful. Shame on the authors and the publisher for foisting this on an unsuspecting public. I would also say shame on the editors and fact-checkers but it is not possible that any were employed in the execution (!) of this foolish piece of nonsense.
There are countless beautifully written books about Lincoln and the Civil War. I suggest you furl your brow and scarf up some of them, instead.
