Absorbx clumps rock hard, but is the absolute *worst* tracking litter ever
Arm & Hammer apparently stopped making its Clump & Seal Lightweight dust-free cat litter and, in a bind after years of use, I bought this ostensible replacement. The old litter was brown (matching the color of the top-rated litter mat we use) and while it generated fragile clumps, there was relatively minimal tracking. The Absorbx is the color of South Beach sand. It clumps like a boss, so daily litter box clean is as close to a joy as one can get. That's the good news. But the bad news is really, really, really bad. In decades of cat ownership (we currently have three), I have never *ever* seen cat litter tracking this bad. To start with, I have to vacuum the litter mat at least once a day. Our stairs, which have dark wood -- and which are a good 30 feet from the litter box -- have trails of white sand litter. Litter is everywhere throughout the house. Worst of all, the cats' paws are coated with white sand powder -- and if they get up on any piece of dark colored furniture, which we have a lot of, there are white powder paw prints and other white powder streaks all over. And you cannot simply brush these powder prints off -- at the very least, you have to get a moistened paper towel and wipe it down. One of our cats jumped on my lap yesterday -- I was wearing dark olive colored shorts. Guess what I had all over me? I don't know what half-baked genius at Arm & Hammer developed this litter, but while they got the clumping part down perfectly, they completely blew the tracking part in the worst possible, sales-losing way imaginable. The excellent clumping is what gets this two stars. Without it, it's a one star. Don't buy this incredibly poorly thought out litter. And Arm & Hammer, fire your cat litter team. You've lost this customer. EDIT: After going back to an option I hadn't used in 10 years or so—Tidy Cat 24/7 regular weight cat litter—and having miserable luck with its poor clumping and the pee-soaked broken-off clump edges that would stick to the sides of the litter box (yeccch), I noted that the regular weight Clump & Seal Multi-Cat was still being sold. I switched to that, and it's been a dream both clumping-wise (as good as the Absorbx and the old lightweight Clump & Seal) and tracking-wise. The only downside is, of course, that it's not lightweight. But if you can get past that, it's the best out there IMO. Unfortunately, Amazon has been hit or miss about selling it, so I've been forced to pick it up regularly at a certain large store beginning with a "W."
