DID NOT WORK WITH MULTIPLE STANDARD WINDOWS 10 SYSTEMS!
If you’re running Windows 10, you may want to consider other hardware wallet options.
I bought my first Ledger Nano-S thinking it sounded like the perfect solution to carry my crypto coins in a separate hardware wallet. Easy to use, non-web based, safe, secure… PERFECT, even the price was attractive ($59).
That was the start of my nightmare. IT WOULDN’T TALK TO WINDOWS. NEITHER WOULD THE SECOND NANO-S. NOR WOULD IT TALK TO MY WIFE’s SYSTEM OR A FRIENDs. IT IS NOT WINDOWS 10 COMPATIBLE BASED ON MY EXPERIENCE!
Let me provide a lengthier review…
The LEDGER NANO-S arrived. I couldn’t wait. Followed the directions. Set up my security pin on the unit. Received my 24-word rebuild phrase. Everything was going GREAT!
Then I tried to connect it to Windows 10. Now mind you, I have a Dell Optiplex w/an Intel core i7. A standard Windows machine… and it wouldn’t talk with the Nano-S. Ok. Re-read the directions. Did everything a second time. NO NOTHING. Well, that’s not totally true. Their software said ‘Oops, there was a problem’, told me to save some files of information and restart. So I did.
SAME RESULT! Their online help told me to run a on-line video to help figure out what the problem is. NOTHING WORKED. Then they said ‘change USB cables, ‘try a different USB port’, make sure everything is properly connected (really? Come on. There’s one cable with 2 ends with two different connectors guaranteeing that there couldn’t be an issue plugging it in wrong.). Then they said, ‘try it on another machine’. So I did. I tried it on my wife’s Windows 10 machine and her system didn’t like it any better than mine. NO COMMS!
Ok. Must be a bad unit, that happens. Tell Amazon I’m sending the Nano-S back. They made it very easy to do and promised me a swap to get a replacement Nano-S unit. Three days later, the second unit arrives… WAY TO GO AMAZON! Easy!
Opened it up today, did all the setup (again) on the replacement unit, everything worked fine. The Nano-S appears to be functioning. Plugged it into my Windows 10 system and ...
NOTHING!
GRRRRR! Went back to Ledger’s doc. They want me to disable any VPNs (I don’t have one), turn off my anti-virus (none), turn off my firewall (Windows Defender), go to the Control Panel & find the Nano-S entry & reload the Win10 drivers… yup… did all of that… end result… NOTHING! NO COMMS!
Tried it again on my wife’s Win10 system, same result as before. NOTHING! Tried it on a friend’s Win10 system (Acer based hardware instead of Dell), same result. NOTHING. NO COMMS!
Final insult… they say ‘if it doesn’t work on Windows system, try it on a Mac’. Yeh, like I have nothing better to do than go find a Mac system to make your $59 piece of garbage work!
Went to the Ledger Support site. They tell me to submit my request for help in writing and they’ll get back to me within 10 days. Now I assume the delay is due to all the virus nonsense that’s going on BUT after three different Win10 systems that was the final straw. No phone or web support? THE SECOND NANO-S IS GOING BACK IMMEDIATELY AND LEDGER JUST RECEIVED A BIG FAIL FOR A WINDOWS BASED SOLUTION!
Now, I’m sure Ledger must have at least one site that works (because they claim it does) but if this is an example of how much effort is required to make their Windows-based solution work then they need a new software architecture. I’m running a home automation system, multiple Alexa’s, a high-bandwidth raid-based video system that I built from the ground up, a factory automation system and NONE of that was as hard as trying to connect to Ledger’s Nano-S.
