Made-up history; nothing new these days
According to this book, the 1859 Carrington Event (solar flare) caused powerlines to explode and plunged 5 million people into darkness. But the first urban and industrial arc lighting systems did not exist until the late 1870s, and millions did not benefit from electric lighting for another couple of decades. So much fiction and "news" is now written by functional illiterates that I'm convinced we don't need an EMP to experience societal collapse. Read "The Marching Morons" (1951) by Kornbluth for a prescient scene of 2019 America.
