★★☆☆☆
Not bad for a non-permanent solution.
Having had a shoulder surgery on each shoulder, it’s become somewhat uncomfortable to type with the keyboard on the desk at work, so I bought this because it doesn’t require drilling. As with anything, there are some pros and cons: Pros - It doesn’t require drilling. - The surface area is really large; it fits an extended keyboard (the kind with the ten-key number pad) and there’s still plenty of room for a mouse/mousepad. It’s also deep enough to place a wrist pad in front of the keyboard. - It’s sturdy and weighs more than I thought it would. - It was fairly easy to put together once I hauled it in to the office. At first, it looks like there’s a lot of parts involved, but it moves quickly and the directions were helpful. All in, it took me about 15 mins to put it together and install it to my desk, using only a screw-driver and the Allen wrench provided. - It has a cord manager on the back side, which also serves to keep you from pushing your keyboard off the back side. Cons - You cannot raise or lower this. Once installed, there’s no adjustments other than moving it toward or away from you. It would be nice to be able to lower it more, because it only really lowers the keyboard maybe three to four inches below where it sat on top of the desk. - It would also be swell if there was a way for it to catch so it wouldn’t incrementally creep forward and under the desk as you’re using it. This isn’t a huge issue, but it does occasionally happen. Perhaps I’m just too exhuberant of a typist. - When the platform isn’t gradually creeping in, the keyboard definitely is, as there’s nothing that provides traction or resistance; therefore, I am constantly readjusting my keyboard. I’m going to install some double sided foam tape or put a cut piece of rug-gripper underneath the keyboard and see if it helps. - This only works on straight edges. I really needed a keyboard tray that would accommodate an L-shaped desk at the 90 degree angle, but I would have had to have bought one that required drilling. If the manufacturer allowed the two brackets that clamp onto the desk to swivel, it would make this product more universal. I’m sure that’s easier said than done, but that’s just my two cents. This mostly serves my purposes and it was less expensive than others, but the kind that requires drilling probably would have been better. I don’t think my boss would appreciate that, though. UPDATE after about three months of use: - So the creep-in of the tray is actually REALLY annoying over time. They really do need to include some sort of lock-in-place mechanism or create more resistance that reduces the constant forward movement of the tray. - The rug gripper padding I put underneath the keyboard has helped a little to keep the keyboard in place, but only a little AND it looks sloppy. Had the manufacturer simply added some sort of permanent rubber matting to the hard surface, it would have been a lot better. - For these two reasons, I’m downgrading from my original four stars to two. Bummer.
