Intuit shoots foot. Again.
If this feels familiar it's because Intuit has done this before. Remember a few years ago when they limited the number of installations allowed per purchase? I couldn't even load a second copy on my laptop to take to my accountant's office. Outraged reviews here and by columnists like Walt Mossberg at the Wall Street Journal caused them to backtrack. That surely must have cost them customers, but it's been a while and my guess is the experience has faded from the institutional memory of Intuit, so they do it again. I thought I was smart because I glanced at the Amazon reviews and silently cursed before ordering Premier for the Schedule D. It was only after receiving the order I realized I need Home and Business for the Schedule C so I had to send my order back. Both schedules were handled by Deluxe in past years, so I feel double-whammied. I'm not as smart as I thought I was. Bob Meighan, Intuit VP, says these changes are necessary for consistency across the desktop, web, and mobile versions of TurboTax. As in "We crippled the Deluxe web version so we have to do the same for the desktop version (even though desktop was there first)." Realistically, it's unlikely that long term users like me would take the time and incur the risk of data loss to move tax returns to a competitor and Intuit knows that. Surely bad reviews cost them new customers, however, and everyone should realize what Intuit will do to them once they've been locked into a product that needs frequent updates (think Quicken).
