Design flaw / Poor customer service
First, this vacuum works. I have a Miele that I use as my main vacuum, but wanted something that was easy to access, quick to start up, enough power to pickup cat liter (my cat has decided that it is fun to not only bury her waste with liter, but my mud room floor), cordless, and easy to empty.
The dyson V8 checks all of the aforementioned criteria. However, this vacuum is too easy to empty. All you need to do is accidentally carry it upright or store it on the wall charger without emptying the canister. If you look at the photo the arrow points to a large hole in the canister where debris flows from your attachment to the canister. If you take up anything that is granular (i.e. Cat liter, kids Cheerios or the like) it all comes right back out on to the floor. Depending on how full it gets, and I should comment I am mindful not to fill it anywhere near the max line labeled on the canister, you can start to lose your canister debris holding the unit anywhere from 75 ish degrees to 90.
I called customer service and after a good 45 minutes of explaining to the rep my issue, she finally saw what I was describing, proceeded to laugh and told me that I needed to always empty it before storing the vacuum. Not the end of the world since the canister is super easy to empty, but talk about an inconvenience. The Dyson is not the most expensive in the world, but it is not on the cheaper end of the spectrum. I have trouble thinking that this is a company that prides themselves on engineering, but then has such oversight to what appears could be a quick fix in design.
So be warned that if you are going to use this in any similar manner to the one I described, then you must empty it every time after use regardless of the amount of debris in the canister, and hold the canister fairly level as you navigate to your bin, or you will empty the debris onto your floor and get to do it all over again.
