Tips that might prevent Headaches
The light itself is great. It's sleek and wonderful, but I can't find myself to get over the poor craftsmanship involved in this product....I had 1 originally and the light always flickered for some odd reason, returned it for a second one same thing? There’s no way I can get 2 bad in a row. I decided to tear the power box apart. I do extensive work with aircraft repair and what I found was shameful. The soldering jobs on the card were horrible. Not enough solder, too much solder, too much flux, cold joints and burn marks. I find myself thinking they allowed this to go through? Took it to work and used 99% alcohol to scrub the board down making sure everything was shinny and resoldered connections to fix the issues I saw on the board. Once I completed everything, the light works good as new. So far no issues with the light going haywire on me since I’ve performed this repair... I'd advise anyone having issues is to use alcohol and a q-tip to clean the board from head to toe. Let it dry and give it a run. I believe this should fix many issues....if the quality control is as bad as I think.
20160218 Update - After seeing how many power supply issues people where having I decided to go ahead and try that replacement power supply. After spending 35$ later i received a power supply that is different I should say. The power supply has zero markings, but the size of it, bigger than the original one. This one has been able to handle the light without any issues after a 2 week test period before i swapped back to the original one. The one thing i find myself scratching my head on...did they purposely sell a weaker power supply with this product to save money or cut cost? I'm going with the latter on this one, but the replacement i bought from aqua vibrant seems to be able to hold it’s on with no lifesaving needed. I'll ride out the original one till it dies than swap back to the aqua vibrant one. And for those wondering are the actual internals of the aqua vibrant one bigger? The answer to that is yes, I can confirm it far surpasses the smaller one in terms of size and power.
* The original unit puts off some nice heat. I try to keep it elevated to keep it cool as possible or as in the picture I run mine not even in its case. Warning water and electrical do not mix, the cord is short so it's always a good distance close to the tank, I always unplug and remove the unit near tank before doing the dirty work. Or maybe i should remove that warning and let Darwin’s theory take over. The aqua vibrant one manages it heat load better when hooked up to the 36 in light, so I keep it inside of its case. So far the light still shines bright zero LED's burnt out, just the power supply issue....
20160530 - I like the way the light performs I decided to by a second one. However this time I made sure in inspect the power supply before applying power. My guess was right; they really need a better quality check in the manufacturing process of this light. I urge all buyers of this product to clean the back of the power supply with alcohol before use. It's easy to open just four screws and it comes out. If you fail to use the alcohol, you shorten the lifespan of your equipment. All the brown you see in the picture is called 'Flux". You are supposed to clean it off after manufacturing process...failure to do so gives birth to corrosion, high resistance and eventually failure of your part (basically causing more stress as soon as you start using it). I cannot recommend the lights to anyone until this gets fixed or else everyone is going to keep shelling out for power supplies long before the lights die out.
20161211 Update - My dimmer setup is still going strong with no issues with burnt out lights or flickering lights. The aquavibrant power supplies have the same hook ups as the original power supply. I've attached pictures of my current setup. I bought a project box and drilled holes into the plastic for ventilation purposes. I ended up email Finnex to get a connecter set-up (the same one used to hook the power supply and light together) I don't remember how much it costed in the end, but it was fairly cheap. If you don't want to have those hook ups you can always splice together the wiring to get it to work. Basic wiring is from wall outlet into power supply, going out of the power supply into the dimmer box, and then out of the dimmer box to the light. Here is the link to the dimmer I'm currently using, it gives me a nice range for dimming. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0082J5H36/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
