Doesn't anyone do basic fact checking anymore?!
I really tried to like this book, the premise is interesting. But, the author and many of the "experts" he hangs out with could not care less about simple fact checking. Near the beginning of the book the author says that all National Forests allow fireworks. Nope. And the former detective, Paulides, whom the author spends way too much time with, could also not care less about accuracy. Got to the part of the book where he talks about "clusters" of missing people. One of the "clusters" is Mount Rainier National Park where I've spent a lot of time my whole life. I just watched the first few minutes of a YouTube video that Paulides posted in July about the Mt Rainier "cluster." He doesn't get more than a few seconds into his monologue before he just starts spewing nonsense. He can't be bothered to check the summit elevation of Mt Rainier, he can't be bothered to check where Paradise Inn is actually located, and he apparently didn't leave the parking lot on his one day visit to the park. If he had, or if he had consulted a map (wouldn't even need to leave his car to do that) he could have spared us the nonsense about why Mt Rainier, out of so many parks he claims expertise on, did not immediately recover the body of a climber who fell in June. Why on earth would the author spend so much time quoting someone who is so obviously uninterested in accuracy and research? After seeing this video by one of his experts, I'm giving up and I'm not yet halfway through. What a mess. Save your money and time. This is nothing more than fiction. If you're going to pass something off as non-fiction at least do some basic fact checking.
