VERY SUSPICIOUS. NOT RECOMMENDED
As far as I can tell, the product in the paper bag is actually erythritol - but I am not a chemist and can't prove it. What I can speak to is the labeling about which there are numerous unsettling problems.
First, is the off-putting, aggressive, argumentative assertion on the label:
"That's right, grown in the US ofA, not China. These colors don't run."
That was offensive to me since I have never accused this unknown company of "growing" their product outside of the country - so why the nasty attitude right on their label? I felt attacked - like I was being accused of supporting food products that came from elsewhere.
Second, the left side of the label states:
"Grown in USA, Packed in California" ;
the right side of the label states:
"Manufactured for: Anthony's Almonds"
So I ask, which is it - grown or manufactured???
Of COURSE it is manufactured... because you can not plant erythritol. Eryithritol is not GROWN. It is MANUFACTURED via a chemical process. They take the starch out of corn then through a chemical hydrolysis process the long starch molecules are broken down into smaller molecules and then fermented with a fungus to convert it into erythritol. Then is has to be CLEANED which is a multiple step process to remove the fungus and all of the other impurities. Finally it has to be crystallized with a process that must be repeated and repeated to end up with 99.9% purity.
When I looked up the address of the "manufacturing" plant on Google Maps it looks like a storage unit - not the sort of facility that could handle such a large, precise, chemical manufacturing process, which, at a MINIMUM, should have all kinds of ventilation on top of there building.
Very suspicious, in my opinion.
Last, The Nutrition Facts label has numerous errors, the most glaring is that it indicates that for a 100g serving size it has 100g of Total Carbohydrates and claims this is 33%. WTF?? The listing of sugar alcohols is absent - bizarre since that is specifically what erythritol is - a sugar alcohol.
For these reasons and others, I do NOT RECOMMEND this product.
(hopefully the pic from the label shows up in this review)
