Initial review:
As a 40-year musician who uses top-notch equipment, this is a pleasant surprise.
We wanted to use this to wirelessly stream 24-bit backing tracks from iPads and phones to our mixer. Quality and low latency are critical to us.
Pros: It works. Super easy setup with voice prompts. Bluetooth is consistent and quickly responds to changes from the iPad. Quality is very good. When you turn the unit on after the first pairing, it automatically re-pairs with device. This is a time saver. As with any signal transport change, there will always be slight variations in EQ and presence, and that was expected and easily compensated for. However, the quality is as good as a cable after doing A/B testing for 3 hours.
Cons:
1- The "Long Range" "164" ft claim is relative. If the signal is not line-of-site, reduce that to 50-60 ft.
2- Volume. In RX mode, make sure transmitting device (iPad, phone, etc) is at full volume. Otherwise, you will definitely hear background hiss. In our A/B testing, we found that the Avantec device was almost equal volume as the cable, with about 93% of the volume of the cable connection. When the transmitting device is at full volume, the quality is there.
Summary: All in all, this is a worthwhile purchase so far. We'll see how it does in a live setting with stray signals and a truckload of equipment's magnetic fields, a crowd of people with bluetooth devices, etc. So far, tests are very pleasant.
UPDATE:
After 8 hours of live music streaming with the unit, here are our conclusions:
HD Priority Mode: Useless. It couldn't keep a connection with the unit only 5 feet line-of-site from the iPad.
LL Priority Mode: Mostly fine, with 3 instances of signal loss. Again, only 5 feet line-of-site away.
I do not know how they got the 164" value from, but it definitely doesn't have more than a 4-feet uninterrupted signal consistently.
While the music quality is not quite as good in LL mode as opposed to HD mode, it is still good quality audio.
Summary: If only we could count on the signal being dependable. But alas, it is not. We don't recommend this for any setting where the unit has to be depended on. While it might be fine for your use, for ours--it has to be returned. We were really hoping this would be the answer for us.
