Story of the Rise of Fall and rebirth of Bourbon Royalty ruined by self serving author
The Van Winkle rise and fall makes for a story to be well told about what it means to live in our great country. I picked up this read having read some other outstanding short pieces by this author. I have recently sworn off Television and the division it fosters and was looking forward to the compelling story of how this brand and family have become "Bourbon Royalty." What I was treated to was a nauseating look at the authors family life of prejudice and racism in the Deep South. In addition more was written about the author, his life of privilege, travel, eating and drinking than that of the subject. The author wonders about what he will leave to his child, the pending birth described in detail. Hopefully what his child will learn somewhere is humility and perspective that may not be available at home. To top of this massive waste of opportunity for the author he somehow weaves politics into his book blaming Donald Trump for the murder of a priest in the 1960's. I am certainly no Trump fan but what an inane leap in a book that had a compelling subject and story line. I enjoyed the Van Winkle narrative at the end of the book more than any other part. Perhaps he was trying to salvage the project much like he saved his brand.
